Episode 6x01-02 -- LA X-Offender

INTRO: Desire Brings Me Back

Well knock me sideways and dip me in brown water, if that wasn’t the LONGEST hiatus EVER! The latest installment of LOST was not only more than well worth the wait, but it also carried with it a different, heavier feeling than any other that preceded it. There is a deep, bittersweet sentiment in the air for me at least, in the knowledge that this is the final season premiere of the greatest television experience that has ever graced the screen. It seems to fit the current atmosphere of the show in having two separate “timelines” occurring at once, as I am overwhelmed with both excitement and a supreme touch of sadness. And although I am not going to dwell on this thought for long, I did want to first acknowledge it for a moment.

I also wanted to mention it’s a thrill to be back here providing a little recap and analysis for you all. I’m sending out a huge thank you to my supporters over the years who have kept me going with their love and encouragement, as well as a giant ‘hello’ to all the new readers that have come along just recently. It’s a true pleasure to be here with the very best community of friends and fans I’ve ever had the blessing of being a part of.

For those of you who haven’t read my articles before, I like to pick a band that seems to fit the episode and use their song titles for my section titles. For “LA X”, I have chosen a group who got their start in the DHARMA-esque mid-70’s, the ever-so-appropriate Blondie.

As with most two-part episodes, this is a long one, so grab your beverage of choice, sit back in your most comfy rocking chair, and (hopefully) enjoy!

Great review/opinion/toughts about this new season premiere, I will be reading more as you post and try to comment.

For now I just wanted to point out my take on Timeline-X's Hurley; since the hatch was never made in this dimension, the french would never come to the island,
and also the crazy guy from witch Hugo got the lottery numbers, wouldn't have heard them in the first place.
So what role do the numbers play on this timeline if any, Did Hurley won the lottery? With what numbers?

thanks so much for reading and for the kind words.

i am also with you on your line of though re: the numbers, i am just not as ready to discount their existence in the X timeline just yet. ;)

Nice read anna...

Interesting take on the statue,I was thinking the same, its the same demolished remains we've known since first seen in LTDA and now exists in the X timeline....these time lines may not exist as separate as we might think! Also as much as Terry's awesome uber creepy faces freaks everyone out,I kinda find MIB rather sympathetic!

Very nicely done, as usual. As to MIB Locke's words, I just want to go home, the first thing that came to my mind was Juliet. She was one who had a VERY good reason to go home and she stated it a few times even bringing herself to tears. I'm wondering if Juliet through her death, is part of the smoke monster? If that's the case, could there be 2 monsters? One ancient and one created in the Jughead explosion? Duality is such a VERY common theme in the LOST universe. Remember, John said when he saw the monster he saw white and beauty, not black.

I too, wanted to see more answers, not other Others. And when Cindy brought in Zack and Emma with food, I thought, if they serve up monkey brains, I'm gonna scream!!

Great article.
I've been throwing around the idea that jacob and the black monster represent a good and evil spiritual governance over the island, and the characters have perhaps been pawns in the dual between jacob and the black monster. Everyone seemed extremely scared by the prospect that jacob is dead, and the monster now being in control. The pool being brown instead of clean was perhaps a sub reference to that. I believe that scene where the black monster stopped in front of Mr. Eko is a really important part of the puzzle, probably be because he was a priest tying into the relationship between the monster not being able to kill jacob for whatever reason. I'm not sure what jacob is trying to achieve, and what the final outcome is supposed to be that is 'progress', but it would seem like the characters were 'recruited' to be there, and destiny is obviously a big part of the story.
As usual it leaves me scratching my head, but it was a good start to the season.

thanks so much for reading everyone! it's been so long since i did a recap, and it took me so long to do this one (2 hour episodes are BEASTS) that i wasn't really sure how it would be received. you all are making me feel a lot better about continuing the season. i really look forward to it! :) <3

Great read Anna, thank you! I'm really looking forward to reading your weekly blogs during this final season! Here in Australia we only got our screening of the 3 hour premiere extravaganza a few hours ago (a week behind the US). I watched it online last week, I couldn't wait a moment longer after almost 9 months of torturous waiting! After my second helping tonight I feel more strongly than ever that LOST is without a doubt the most brilliant television series ever created. FACT.
