Episode 6x04 -- Sympathy for the Devil

Note: Sorry for the delay once again. This was originally composed after the airing of 6x04, “The Substitute”, but became “trapped” sort of like MIB in a suddenly corrupted version of good ol' Microsoft Word. Thank goodness for the wonderful “Open Office”, the software That Has Saved (It) All.

INTRO: On with the Show

This week’s Locke-centric “The Substitute” was probably the best thing that could have happened to soothe all of the restless natives out in the LOST-iverse who cried “filler” after last week’s slow-but-steady focus on Kate Austen. I mean really, who doesn’t get a kick from Locke’s story? Even if he isn’t your favorite character, you have to admit that after all that has happened to the man, his tale is arguably the most epic of all of LOST’s characters. Now, in this final season, I feel somewhat saddened by the thought that this could very well have been the last episode which centers on this amazing man’s tale.

But enough of my mushy sentimentalizing. This is Locke’s time and there’s always more than plenty to cover in one of his installments. So let’s get to it!

I Need a Substitute (aka An APOLLOgy to My Readers)

Hey LOSTies,

I just wanted to apologize for being MIA for last week's recap on Episode 6x04, "The Substitute". You know I love me some Locke, and already had an article started, but during my typical weekend writing time I was stricken with some type of virus that had be bed-bound for about 5 days straight. I might even say I was infected, though I promise I have not been claimed!

To top it off, Microsoft in all its brilliance decided to automatically update my computer the other night and the aftermath has now corrupted my Word program, where both of my recaps for 6x04 and this week's installment, 6x05 "The Lighthouse" were in-progress. Attempts to open these articles results in an immediate crash. BUMMER! I am so excited for the bands I have picked for both of these articles, as well as the episodes themselves, of course.

As I get this sorted out, I will DEFINITELY be posting these recaps as soon as I can. I've tried everything that a moderate computer geek can do, including installing about 40 various updates, which now have only seemed to make the issue worse. So I am looking for alternatives, most namely, the Open Office software, and with high hopes I plan to get things back on track this weekend.

In the meantime, please check out my second Cafe Press shop for the LOST Fan Portal, The 4TF Smokey Shop. I decided to go with Jacob's scales motif...because you know, I love inside jokes! As with my first shop, The 4TF Locke Shop, I will be rotating designs as they come to me, so grab one of these up if you like it because you never know when it will disappear in a puff of smoke!

Until next time (hopefully very soon!),
NAMASTE!

The NEW Four Toed Foot LOCKE SHOP at Cafe Press

Many of you already know that Cafe Press and ABC have teamed up to allow LOST fans to design and sell their own show-inspired apparel and gifts. It's really a wonderful opportunity for folks who love LOST to share their creations without having to worry about copyright issues, and possibly make a few extra bucks in the process. Cafe Press has even built a designated section to make it easy to find the LOST goodies on their site, The LOST TV Fan Portal, and it's already overflowing with THOUSANDS of items created by people in the LOST community.

Well finally The Four Toed Foot has also joined the fun!

You can now purchase shirts, prints, and other gear featuring everyone's favorite destiny-loving, time-traveling, dead-man-turned-Smoke Monster, John Locke at The 4TF Locke Shop! The first design I've created for the store is one that I've had saved in the back of my mind for several years now.

Introducing
"John Locke's Blow Up Everything That Can Get Us Off The Island Tour Shirt"!

But this isn't the end of the Locke designs, as I am working on a new one to add to the shop right now. As I move forward I will be rotating new designs in the shop so that each one will only be available for a limited time. This will make each one even more "special".

Locke would definitely like this...

I will also be creating additional shops, each with its own theme. Again, every time a new design is added it will be announced here and will be available for a certain amount of time. If a particular design sells well, or I receive requests to add it to the store again, I will simply rotate it back into the queue and make it available once more.

If anyone has any thoughts, suggestions, or requests, feel free to leave them in the comments area below. I appreciate any and all feedback on this idea as well as the designs themselves!

The LOST Blogging Collective Q&A - Week of 02/15/10 + 4TF Featured !!!

Hey LOSTies,
It's time again to share with you the Stream of Consciousness blog's Weekly Q&A session with The LOST Blogging Collective. This week's questions were:

1) Games have been mentioned continually throughout the series - from Locke's backgammon allegories, to Jacob's talk of a "loophole". This week, Sawyer described Sayid's resurrection as him earning "another go around". Do you believe the Lost characters are taking part in some kind of game/test, and if so, how can they possibly win/pass this scenario?

2) On a lighter note, Kate just can't stop following Sawyer around!! I know it is a question that a large part of the fandom love to ask (and an equally large number loathe to hear), so let's get it out of the way. Who will Kate finally "end up" with?

So if you want to know how the Collective answered (trust me, you DO), then mosey on over to S.o.C. at the link below...

The LOST Blogging Collective - Weekly Roundup for S06-E03 "What Kate Does"

In addition, along with LOST mega-blog, Room 23, The Four Toed Foot was featured as S.o.C.'s Website of the Week! I think some of the nicest things that have ever been said about this little labor of love of mine were said in this post that served as part-review, part-plug for 4TF. Here is a short blurb:

"...her analysis are very insightful and usually pick up on a lot of things that other bloggers have missed. For example, Anna is the first blogger I have read to have instantly revisited the 'skipping record/numerous iterations'" theory that everyone had visited at some point during Season 5, and a theory that should have been glaringly obvious to all given this Season's new storytelling device."

DEFINITELY check it out! What an honor to be recognized so!

Episode 6x03 -- Kate

I sincerely apologize for the delay getting this out to you all. Although I can’t time travel (yet) as I’d like to, I suppose it’s better late than never!

INTRO: Bad Idea

While it may not have been the myth-busting explosion of answers many LOST fans are now eagerly anticipating (and expecting) in this sixth and final season, the third episode “What Kate Does” offered up quite a decent helping of surprises. For the most part the revelations were strictly personality-based. Character-development has always been one of LOST’s strengths since the series premiered, and it is what originally kept me glued to the screen with the need to learn more about each of the survivors’ lives. (OK, ok, the monster noises kept me watching even more...I won’t deny it!) But honestly, historically speaking I have never been a huge fan of the Kate-centric episodes.

Now before any “boos” and “hisses” start flying my way, it is important for me to note that this is not because I always consider the story of Ms. Austen to be what is referred to as “filler”, though we have had a handful of episodes in past seasons that may have fit this bill. Her life on and off the Island has had its share of complexity, emotional turmoil, and total excitement. We all know that Kate and running are like polar bears and fish biscuits. She has demonstrated a strong will to survive no matter what, and a tenacity that has for the most part remained unmatched by any of the other female roles in the show. And of course, Kate has had a severe fondness for getting into all kinds of trouble, with or without a firearm in tow.

I’m just not really a fan of her character’s personality overall, and even though I tend to steer clear of persecuting her in my recaps, snide comments are often going off at a rapid-fire pace secretly inside my head. Please also know my view has nothing to do with Evangeline Lilly’s acting. She’s handled this complex, self-motivated role with true professional style. At times there are even echoes of Sigourney Weaver’s “Ripley” in regards to her strength. Ms. Austen has had some truly amazing moments where my respect for her character has unexpectedly been raised up a level. But in my opinion, overall she just isn’t the most likable person there is in the LOST universe.

With that being said, the new timeline is offering Kate a lot of potential, and I must say that this episode was an exception to my usual view of her story. I definitely enjoyed the unfolding tale of how she handled herself in this installment, especially in relation to Claire, and towards the end actually found myself wanting more.
